Today would have been James Owen Sullivan’s (also known as The Rev) 31st birthday. He was the drummer for the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold before he passed away in 2009. Sullivan grew up in Huntington Beach, California with the other four members of his band. He was kicked out of school at a very young age, and struggled for many years before A7X finally took off. After all his success, it is hard to believe that at one point in his life, he lived in both his car and then at a local laundromat.
Many people, myself included, remember him as one of the greatest metal drummers of all time, and in 2010, The Rev won the award for Best Drummer at the second annual Revolver Golden God Awards. His family and band accepted the award on his behalf. In honor of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, I encourage you to listen to “Fiction” by Avenged Sevenfold. Originally titled “Death,” it is the last song written by The Rev and was actually recorded three days before his death.
Jimmy, you are sorely missed, and the world of metal is not the same without you. Happy birthday!
